Sotavento, also known as Playa de la Barca, boasts an expansive stretch of white sand located in the southern part of Fuerteventura. During spring and summer, the prevailing trade winds from the north grace its shores, making it a haven for enthusiasts of windsurfing, kitesurfing, and wing-foiling. Due to the island’s volcanic terrain, the Venturi effect can cause the winds to be especially strong and gusty. While the dominant north wind typically comes from a side off-shore direction, there are readily available emergency services on the beach for any unexpected challenges.

Globally recognized, Sotavento Playa Barca has been the proud host of world championships in windsurfing, kitesurfing, and, more recently, wing-foiling. For those keen to learn or rent equipment, the Rene Egli water sports center provides comprehensive offerings for all water sports activities.

In this area, natural flat water lagoons form twice a month during the full moon and the quarter moon. Besides being an extraordinary spectacle of nature, the Sotavento Lagoons offer a perfect setting for water sports like kitesurfing, windsurfing, and wing-foiling. Thanks to their calm waters, enthusiasts can learn and perfect their skills safely. These conditions make Sotavento a thrilling destination for water sports lovers.
