Overview of the Fuerteventura Climate

Often known as “the islands of eternal spring“, the Canary Islands enjoy pleasant weather throughout the year. Yet, Fuerteventura’s climate stands out. It boasts over 300 days of sunshine each year and incredibly low precipitation levels, setting it apart from the rest of the archipelago.

Air temperature in Fuerteventura

The average air temperature in Fuerteventura is around 20°C throughout the year. There’s little variation between summer (24°C) and winter (18°C), which makes Fuerteventura an ideal beach and holiday destination year-round.

Rainfall in Fuerteventura

Unlike the western Canary Islands, Fuerteventura doesn’t have mountains of sufficient height to retain clouds. These clouds simply pass over the island without causing precipitation. As a result, Fuerteventura receives less rainfall than the other islands, with precipitation levels reaching only about 150 mm of rain per year. This rainfall is almost exclusively in autumn and winter, from October to March.

Wind in Fuerteventura

The summer months in Fuerteventura are characterized by the steady blow of the trade winds, known as “Alisios”. These winds create ideal conditions for water sports such as kitesurfing and windsurfing, making the island a sought-after destination for enthusiasts. Interestingly, despite the intense summer sun, the Alisios provide a refreshing, cooling effect, offering a pleasant contrast between the warm sunlight and the cool breezes.
In Fuerteventura, wind activity begins to diminish from September during the autumn. It then picks up again in the winter months, although it’s less intense and regular compared to the summer period.

Sea temperature in Fuerteventura

Due to its latitude and location in the Atlantic Ocean, the sea temperature off the coast of Fuerteventura doesn’t drop below 18°C in winter. However, in the warmest months of summer, influenced by the cold Canary Ocean current, the sea temperature in Fuerteventura only reaches 23°C. This is a few degrees below what one might expect at this latitude, but it’s still quite comfortable and provides a refreshing respite from the sun’s heat.

Calima and sand storms in Fuerteventura

A few times a year, Fuerteventura experiences a hot wind from the southeast and east known locally as “Calima.” This wind causes high temperatures, dries out the air, and brings dust or fine sand from the Sahara desert, reducing visibility to just a few hundred meters. These atmospheric conditions can irritate the eyes and cause respiratory disturbances, typically lasting no more than 2 or 3 days. However, in recent years, the Calima has become increasingly frequent during the summer months and can even persist for entire weeks.
During periods of intense Calima, the phenomenon filters the sun’s rays, casting a golden light over the island. This effect transforms Fuerteventura into a surreal, lunar-like landscape that captivates both locals and visitors alike.

Summer weather in Fuerteventura

Summer in Fuerteventura is dry, sunny, and windy. Throughout July, August, and September, the island experiences an average daytime temperature of 27°C, low humidity, no precipitation, and approximately 10 hours of sunshine daily. The regular northeast trade winds bring a pleasant cooling effect. As night falls, temperatures drop to around 20°C, ensuring comfortable conditions for enjoying the island’s nightlife.

Autumn weather in Fuerteventura

Autumn in Fuerteventura is a delightful season. In October, Fuerteventura enjoys an average daytime temperature of 25°C, mild wind conditions, and abundant sunshine. As November and December roll around, the temperature in Fuerteventura drops a few degrees and experiences a slight increase in rainfall.

Winter weather in Fuerteventura

In Fuerteventura, January and February temperatures typically range between 14°C and 21°C, offering an average of 7 hours of daily sunshine, creating appealing conditions for sun-filled winter vacations. It’s worth noting, however, that this is also the season with the highest probability of overcast, rainy days, though typically no more than three or four days per month. By March, the weather in Fuerteventura improves further, with maximum temperatures potentially rising to 23°C, thanks to increased sunshine.

Spring weather in Fuerteventura

Average maximum temperatures are pleasant, ranging from 23°C in April, to 24°C in May, and reaching 25°C in June. Wind patterns vary during this period, shifting between gentle sea breezes and moderate northeast trade winds.
